At Wilson Heights, we believe that one of the important roles of the church in the community is to ‘hold public space.’ Therefore, we are open to conducting marriage ceremonies which are either religious, to a greater or lesser extent, or secular. It is important to us that the service be authentic and appropriate for the couple, as well as for their witnesses and guests. Our Sanctuary can accommodate up to a maximum of 250 people.
It is the theology and practice of Wilson Heights United Church to offer marriage ceremonies to couples regardless of gender.
Planning your wedding
First, reserve the date and time for your wedding by booking it with our church office administrator and making a non-refundable deposit of $100. At the same time, you can set up an appointment with the Minister.
Normally we would prefer that the wedding be held in the church Sanctuary. However, if for some reason you prefer to be married elsewhere, you can discuss this with when you meet with our Minister. The Minister and the Worship Committee of Wilson Heights United Church must approve alternate venues.
Our Minister normally officiates at wedding ceremonies held at Wilson Heights. If for some reason this is not possible, the Worship Committee will arrange for another ministry person to lead the service.
If you are considering inviting another officiant to conduct or participate in your service, please speak to our Minister. The Worship Committee and our Minister must approve guest celebrants.
Preparing for marriage
As a matter of policy, couples planning to marry must obtain a marriage licence issued by the province of British Columbia, as well as participate in some marriage preparation prior to the wedding. We feel it is part of our responsibility to you, to ensure that you are as informed as possible when making your marriage vows.
Normally, the preparation will take place in a session or a number of meetings with the Minister. At the initial meeting, you’ll cover questions about the service, music, a rehearsal and logistics. Preparation meetings are included in the wedding fee.
Wedding ceremony fees
The regular fee for a wedding ceremony is $700: $100 deposit in advance and the balance to be paid in full by the rehearsal date.
